Spontaneous Construction, presented by Search & Restore, is a series based on jazz's most important and distinctive element: improvisation. Each Friday night at 12:30am, ensembles are created from a pool of musicians ranging from the up-and-coming to the legendary, all hand-picked to perform as a group for the first time. No rules or boundaries exist - the artists are free to create music on the spot as they see fit. As the Blue Note celebrates its 30th year, this series brings back the feel of the club's old Late Night Jam Sessions, but with a new and forward-thinking concept.

Saxophonist Keir Neuringer composes and improvises acoustic and electronic music, writes socio-political performance texts and essays, and creates interdisciplinary artworks. Over the last 25 years, he has cultivated a personal and intensely physical approach to solo saxophone improvisation that honors and builds upon diverse music-making traditions. When not performing solo, he works with virtuoso bassist Rafal Mazur, experimental turntablist DJ Sniff, and Dutch contemporary music group Ensemble Klang. He has also performed with free improvisation legends Evan Parker and Mischa Mengelberg and electronic music pioneers Michel Waisvisz, Joel Ryan, and Marek Choloniewski. He has released Unison Lines ( 2010) with Mazur as well as the cassette tape Conquistadors under his Afghanistan project and two CDs under the moniker The Love Story.

Born in Tempe, Arizona, drummer Chad Taylor has been active in both the New York and Chicago music scenes since the early '90s. He helped form the Chicago Underground Ensembles with Rob Mazurek and Jeff Parker, Triptych Myth with Cooper-Moore, and Digital Primitives with Assif Tashar. He has performed at most major jazz and rock festivals around the world, has appeared on over 50 recordings, and has worked with Marc Ribot's Spiritual Unity project, Iron and Wine, The Swell Season, Pharoah Sanders, Roscoe Mitchell, John Zorn, Evan Parker, Ellery Eskelin, Tony Malaby, Craig Taborn, and many other great bands and artists. He currently lives in Jersey City, where he leads his own band, Circle Down.

Guitarist Jonathan Goldberger spent most of his youth on the outskirts of the Everglades. From there he migrated west to the Rockies, where he studied and performed with Art Lande and Ron Miles, before finding his way to Brooklyn. He has worked extensively in both the music and film worlds, including composing and producing the music for the award-winning feature films Trans (1998) and The Hawk is Dying (2006). He appears regularly with James "Blood" Ulmer, Andrew D'Angelo, Leni Stern, Erik Friedlander, Todd Sickafoose, Jenny Scheinman, Curtis Hasselbring, DJ Logic, and Jessica Lurie, among others. He also works with Jonathan Moritz's Amalgam, Steven Bernstein's Sex Mob, and Rocket Engine, and he is a founding member of Fat Mama, a widely recognized exponent of the jamband movement.

Search & Restore is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to uniting and developing the audience for new jazz music. Founded by Adam Schatz in 2007, S&R does anything and everything to spread the incredible music being made in New York City at this very moment, driven by creative melodic approach and incredible improvisers, through concert presentation (including the Winter Jazzfest & Undead Jazzfest) and web development ( In December, they successfully raised $75,000 through Kickstarter to spend 2011 filming over 200 concerts throughout the city and building artist pages for every musician filmed, creating the first content-based site to focus on new jazz, and a true point of discovery for new and current fans alike. So ... get ready for that.
