Mauricio de Souza
Adrian Cunningham - Sax/Flute/Clarinet
Jerry Weir - Vibes
Bob Rodriguez - Piano
Joonsam Lee - Bass
Mauricio de Souza - Drums

Born in Brasília, Brazil, Maurício de Souza is a jazz drummer who easily performs in both traditional jazz and Brazilian jazz styles. His good taste and finesse have allowed him to play in numerous settings with various accomplished musicians. De Souza was a pupil of Joe Morello and is also influenced by Buddy Rich, Airto Moreira, Dave Weckl, Roy Haynes, and Bill Stewart.

Coming from a musical family, de Souza began playing the drums at age eleven. Within a few months, he began performing with numerous local rock cover bands in his hometown. Always interested in evolving as a musician, he joined the youth percussion group at Brasília's "Teatro Nacional" (National Theater, home of Brasília's Symphony Orchestra). De Souza's attraction to elaborate music eventually brought him to Jazz. While a junior in high school, he spent his summer vacation studying with Joe Morello in New Jersey. Upon graduating from high school, he returned to the US to continue his studies with Mr. Morello and attend college.

Since settling in Northern New Jersey in 2004, de Souza has been very active in the NY/NJ metropolitan area. He has performed at some of the finest jazz venues mostly as a band leader with his two groups: Bossa Brasil® (Brazilian Jazz) and Maurício de Souza Group (Straight Ahead Jazz).

Highlight performances as a band leader include appearances at Blue Note, NJPAC, Red Bank Jazz and Blues Festival, WBGO events, and Penn State Harrisburg.

2010 and 2013 marked the releases of de Souza's two commercial albums: "Here. There..." and "Different Directions". Both albums feature his compositions and arrangements of Brazilian Jazz and Jazz standards. Special guests include Mike Stern (guitar), Marc Copland (piano), John Lee (electric bass), Gary Mazzaroppi (acoustic bass), Greg Gisbert (trumpet/flugelhorn), and Sharel Cassity (alto sax).

With the CD releases came features for both de Souza and his albums in Jazz Week, Jazz Times Magazine, Music Choice Channel, Hot House Jazz Magazine (cover feature and album review), All About Jazz,, The Midwest Record, The New York City Jazz Record, Revista Gente, Correio Braziliense, Jornal de Brasília, and Jazz Inside NY Magazine among countless others. His music is featured on Sirius XM and Pandora and can be heard on radio stations in the US, Canada, Venezuela, Brazil, and Canary Islands.

De Souza has also been interviewed on live radio shows for WBGO, PRI, and Rádio Nacional FM de Brasília. With his groups, he has appeared on live TV for Jornal de Brasília (Brazil) and Citizens TV (New Haven, CT).

For his upcoming Blue Note appearance, de Souza will be performing with his beloved Bossa Brasil® in quintet format: sax, vibes, piano, bass, and drums. The repertoire will include tunes from both albums and will explore sophisticated, pulsating and exotic Brazilian rhythms: Bossa Nova, Samba, Baiăo, and Maracatú. He is looking forward to an exciting performance at Blue Note.
