Afro Aloha Live! blends culture, music, and transformational storytelling into an unforgettable experience. To celebrate Juneteenth, this installment of Afro Aloha Live! will be a combination of our signature event, Black is Art. This is more than a show-it's the cornerstone of culture and conversation.

Be part of a live audience experience of the Afro Aloha Podcast, where you'll hear from influential change-makers in Hawaii and get the chance to ask them questions directly during an interactive audience Q & A. Featuring Sandra Simms, Malik Jones, and Vasha Thomas as our podcast guests, the conversations will be dynamic!

Followed by live music performances ranging from opera, spoken word, R&B and more, this lineup will leave you inspired, excited, and ready to dance! From performances by Riya Davis + Vibe Check, Oaklea Rowe, DJ Jrama, and many more, it will be an unforgettable evening!

Hosted by Amy Benson of Afro Aloha, this night will take you on a journey of collective memory, music, and stories that will make you laugh, dance, cry-all the things!

    Amy Benson is a Nigerian-American multi-faceted creative entrepreneur. Benson was raised in Birmingham, Alabama and her parents are both Nigerian. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas San Antonio. She spent most of her career working in marketing, sales, consulting, and hospitality with Fortune 500 companies before pivoting to more freelance and entrepreneurial endeavors. She relocated to Honolulu from Atlanta, Georgia 12 years ago. In 2020, Benson founded Black Bazaar Honolulu, which later transitioned to Afro Aloha. She’s the visionary behind Black is Art, DRIPNIQ Picnic Festival,  Honolulu Black Pride, and the creator of the Afro Aloha Podcast.

  • Riya Davis

    Riya is a versatile singer of Palauan and Dominican descent who began singing in Hawaii and competed in the high school singing competition Brown Bags to stardom. Since then, she has competed in numerous contests including Hawaii Stars in 2000 and 2001; and MTV's "Say What Karaoke". 
     
    As a background vocalist, Riya has supported Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Natalie Cole, Ruben Studdard, Bobby Caldwell, Sheila E., Ray Parker Jr, Denice Williams, Mary J Blige and many more. Riya is also no stranger to the theatrical stage as well, as an actress she received a Po'okela Award nomination for her role in 'Beehive' at the Manoa Valley Theatre in 2003. In 2006 Riya recorded *I Give My Heart to You" a song written by her father that was dedicated to the men & women serving in the armed forces. They partnered with Jeep/Chrysler's "Operation Gratitude" to send 7000 copies to the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. She also continues to be a featured artist with the 25th Tropic Lightning Band for concerts and special events.
     
    In the recording studio, Riya has contributed to recordings by The Green, Nomad, Mahkess, Mike Love, Paula Fuga, and more, and has sung lead vocals on The Jay.Keyz Projects debut album "The Golden Age."  In 2019, Riya partnered with Honolulu-based Record Label "Soul Kid Records" and began to record original songs for her first album.
     
    Riya held a 3-month residency at Blue Note Hawaii as a lead performer in the "Gospel Brunch" and has also done Tribute performances to Jill Scott, Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Billie Holiday, and Nina Simone there.  
     
    Riya is currently the lead singer of Hawaii-based bands "The Jay.Keyz Project" and "Adagio" and sings on Hawaii’s largest sunset dinner cruise ship, the Star of Honolulu. A private Vocal Instructor, a Saxophonist, a Vocalist, and a mother, Riya has touched hearts all over the world.
