    Lee Ritenour & Dave Grusin

    Guitarist Lee Ritenour has a storied career, one that has earned him 19 GRAMMY nominations, a GRAMMY Award, numerous #1 spots on guitar polls, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian SJ Awards and Alumnus of the Year award from USC. He has recorded over 40 albums, with 35 chart songs, and is a founding member of the contemporary jazz group, Fourplay. His diverse musical style became the foundation of over 3,000 sessions with artists ranging from his first session at 16 with the Mamas and Papas, to Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Simon & Garfunkel and Frank Sinatra. Not to forget the talent appearing on his solo works and collaborations; from his legendary work with Dave Grusin, to Phil Collins, Brazilian greats Ivan Lins, Caetano Veloso, and Djavan, to opera great Renee Fleming.

    Dave Grusin has worked in the profession of music since the late 50’s, variously as an arranger, pianist, composer & record producer. Born in Littleton, CO and educated at the University of Colorado, he holds honorary doctoral degrees from CU, the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and the Manhattan School of music.  

    Considered one of the top 10 film scorers of his generation, Grusin is also renowned as a jazz artist and co-founder of the independent record label GRP. Early fusion jazz albums include “Mountain Dance”, “Harlequin”, and “Migration”, and a deep immersion in digital technology. In the 1990’s he returned to a focus on the acoustic piano, which led to four critically acclaimed tribute albums of Gershwin, Ellington, Mancini, and Bernstein material.

      Growing up in L.A. in the 60’s, Grammy award winning guitarist Lee Ritenour received a rich cross section of exposure to jazz, rock and Brazilian music. From one of his first sessions at 16 with the Mamas and Papas to accompanying Lena Horne and Tony Bennett at 18, his forty year eclectic and storied career is highlighted by a Grammy Award win for his 1986 collaboration with Dave Grusin, Harlequin; 17 Grammy nominations; numerous #1 spots in guitar polls and the prestigious “Alumnus of the Year” award from USC. He has recorded over 40 albums, with 35 chart songs, notably the Top 15 hit “Is It You,” which has become a contemporary jazz radio classic. In the 90s, Ritenour was a founding member of Fourplay with keyboardist Bob James, bassist Nathan East and drummer Harvey Mason.
      From rock to blues to jazz, his diverse music became the foundation of over 3,000 sessions as a young guitarist with a broad spectrum of artists such as Pink Floyd (The Wall), Steely Dan (Aja), Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, B.B. King, Frank Sinatra, Simon & Garfunkel, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand. Not to forget the dazzling array of talent appearing on his solo works and collaborations, notably– Phil Collins, Brazilian greats Ivan Lins, Caetano Veloso, Djavan and Jao Bosco, George Benson, Chaka Kahn, Herbie Hancock, Michael McDonald and opera great Renee Fleming.

      From 1976 to 1995, he was in partnership with Larry Rosen as owners of GRP records. His life as a recording artist and producer has resulted in ten Grammy awards and numerous nominations, (including one for “Two Worlds” in 2002, and another for “Amparo” in 2008.) These two classical projects with guitarist Lee Ritenour feature performances by Renee Fleming, Joshua Bell, Gil Shaham, Chris Botti and James Taylor, among others.  

      He has written over sixty film scores, including The Graduate, Tootsie, The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Firm, Havana, Heaven Can Wait, and On Golden Pond.. Having received 8 Academy Award nominations, he won an Oscar in 1988 for The Milagro Bean Field War, featuring guitarist Angel Romero. Most recently he scored Recount for HBO

      He has also arranged for and/or performed with: Quincy Jones, Gerry Mulligan, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Arnold Steinhardt, Bobby Macferrin, Peggy Lee, Patti Austin, Diana Kral, Grover Washington Jr., Earl Klugh, Arturo Sandoval, Clark Terry, Sergio Mendes, James Taylor, Billy Joel, Andy Williams, Paul Simon, etc.  

      Most recently, he is the subject of a music documentary film, “Dave Grusin, Not Enough Time”, produced and directed by Barbara Bentree & John Rangel. In addition to his profession, Dave is co-founder (with Rosen) of the National Foundation for Jazz Education, a philanthropic group dedicated to helping young jazz musicians. He is also a cattle rancher and a dedicated environmental activist.
