94.7 KUMU Presents
Los Lobos
Formed in 1973 in Los Angeles, Los Lobos began as a traditional Mexican folk group before fusing their sound with L.A.’s punk and college rock scenes. The core lineup—David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano, and former Blasters saxophonist Steve Berlin—gained critical acclaim with their 1984 debut, How Will the Wolf Survive?, tying Bruce Springsteen as Rolling Stone’s Artist of the Year.
They achieved global commercial stardom in 1987 with their chart-topping cover of Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba." Rather than coasting on pop fame, the multi-Grammy® winning band embraced a genre-defying career, pivoting to traditional Tejano/Mariachi tributes (La Pistola y El Corazón), critically acclaimed experimental rock (Kiko), film soundtracks (Desperado), and their 2022 Grammy-winning homage to L.A., Native Sons.
Now over 50 years into their career, Los Lobos remains a legendary American act, celebrated for seamlessly blending norteño, Tejano, rock, punk, blues, and soul into a sound all their own.
