A Bu & Friends

A Bu, a 19-year-old Chinese pianist, jazz improvisor and composer. Born in Beijing, China in 1999, A Bu started to play the piano at the age of 4. In 2009, he enrolled at the Central Conservatory of Music, studying classical piano with professor Zhiwei Zhang. Meanwhile, he began his jazz studies with Chinese jazz pianist Hongwei Kong, and soon started to engage in local and domestic jazz activities. In 2013, A Bu was invited by American jazz icon Chick Corea to play a duet on the master’s solo concert in Shanghai.

In 2014, A Bu enrolled The Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division, subsequently studied classical piano with Choong-Mo Kang and Dr. Ernest Barretta. The same year, A Bu also made his acquaintance with the living legend, Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin, who highly assessed A Bu’s interpretation of his modern, mixed-genre compositions. While studying classical music at school, A Bu kept his interest of jazz and improvisation going forward, he has played in the world renown Blue Note Jazz Club (NYC & Beijing location) and won the 1st prize and Audience Choice at the 2015 edition Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition, as the only Chinese winner in the history of the competition.

A Bu has been performed in many musical occasions, including jazz trio concert in the Forbidden Concert Hall, solo piano concert in the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, and soloist appearance in Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, Moscow House of Music and the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory. As a Chinese artist, A Bu has been twice invited by the UNESCO & Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to attend the International Jazz Day Global All-Star Concert, performing alongside Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Igor Butman and many more.
