Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, Joonsam Lee started out on the electric bass guitar, listening to Jaco Pastorious at age nineteen, and switched to acoustic two years later with the influence of Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Christian McBride and Avishai Cohen. He privately studied classical bass with Yeong-Seok Seong (Seoul National Symphony Orchestra), while also playing in drummer Yeon Namgung's jazz band in TV shows, radio stations and concert halls.

In 2007, he moved to New York City to study at NYU, where he had the privilege of studying and performing with Joe Lovano, Brian Lynch, Ralph Alessi, Kenny Werner, John Scofield, Wayne Krantz, Don Friedman, Lenny Pickett, Andy Gravish, and Jean-Michel Pilc, to name a few. Upon graduating from NYU with a master’s degree, he became busy performing and recording within the city’s fertile jazz and contemporary music scene.

Joonsam currently lives in New York, and in his so far short time living in town, he has played with some of the finest musicians in NYC. He has led his own group, the “Joonsam Lee Quintet”, and as a sideman he performs with a wide array of material and musicians, having toured and played jazz music, Broadway musicals and symphony orchestras (NYKSO).
