John Raymond's "Roots" Trio

Labeled "a prepossessing young trumpet player" (New York Times), John Raymond has been making a name for himself as one of the most promising, up-and-coming jazz musicians in New York. Raymond regularly performs with musicians such as Billy Hart, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Orrin Evans and Linda Oh among others, has recorded with Grammy-nominated singer Sara Bareilles, and has performed at notable events such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival and on NPR's Toast of the Nation New Year's Eve celebration.

The native Minnesotan's newest band - his "Roots" Trio - is a bass-less collective consisting of Raymond (flugelhorn) and rising star musicians Gilad Hekselman (guitar) and Colin Stranahan (drums). Not only is the band's instrumentation unique and fresh, recalling Americana and Folk vibes, but their material is as well. The group's music consists largely of familiar songs at the heart of Raymond's roots - arrangements on American folk songs like "This Land Is Your Land," or "Scarborough Fair," to rocking blues tunes, renditions on classic hymns and indie-rock covers. Combining simple songs with exhilarating improvisation, John Raymond's "Roots" Trio has delighted audiences everywhere with a fresh take on recognizable music.

"Electrifyingly new and strangely familiar at the same time...with his mix of modern sounds and old-fashioned feeling, Raymond is steering jazz in the right direction." (Downbeat Magazine)
