Evil Giraffes On Mars is a NYC based outfit presenting original compositions by way of progressive jazz fusion and science fiction aesthetic. Described as "Vince Guaraldi trapped in a high concept B movie," their music is adventurous, cinematic, and highly energetic. By drawing on a diverse spectrum of influences, EGOM is able to connect with listeners who under normal circumstances would not find themselves in the same room listening to the same band. Their 2009 debut, Cydonia, was well received by audiences and critics alike. The passionate, creative display on this record earned them 4 stars from and solidified their arrival as a poignant new voice in the cluttered New York soundscape. Since that time, EGOM has continued to develop and expand upon their sound, exploring new textures and ideas that reflect their broadening collective interests. 2015 finds the band well seasoned, and poised to release their second offering, Phobosapia.

EGOM's core is comprised of its three founding members, Doron Lev, John Cave and Ryan Slotnick. Lev (Uglybraine, Newcleus, Radio City Spring Spectacular) is a multi-faceted drummer and percussionist, providing a unique rhythmic sensibility that is integral to the band's sound. His organic approach and ability to shift time lay a framework that is supportive of Slotnick's compositions and playing style. Slotnick (Dominic Sinesio, Alpha Mosaic, Uglybraine), in addition to serving as the group's primary composer, employs the Fender Rhodes in a fashion that addresses both bass and keyboard in one. The syncopated left hand bass, anchored with Lev's precision drumming, leaves plenty of room for Cave's rhythmic and colorful guitar work to flourish. John Cave (Talib Kweli, Ski Beatz, Strings n' Skins) goes from raucous to refined, supplying an eclectic arsenal that enables cross-genre investigation. The band's horn section brings together Matt La Von and Chad Lefkowitz-Brown on Soprano Saxophone and Tenor Saxophone, respectively. Joining soon after the group's inception, La Von (The Bushwick Hotel, Palm Slap, Basik Jam Session) executes the band's angular melodies with a lyrical edge. In addition, his pen has helped shape a number of the band's compositions, adding another layer of cohesion to EGOM's creative process. On the other hand, Lefkowitz-Brown (Arturo O'Farrill, Clarence Penn, Taylor Swift), while keeping in the tradition of the great tenor players, brings with him an up to the minute, contemporary vocabulary. His astute ear and awareness on the horn enable him to guide the band into the farthest reaches of improvisational territory. All together, in friendship and mutual admiration, EGOM forms a special musical blend, suited for the times and geared for the future. Evil Giraffes on Mars is thrilled to return to the Blue Note and will be performing for the Late Night Groove Series on Friday, July 31, 2015. Stick your neck out and support!
