"Syracuse's Sophistafunk, like the name implies, prefers its hip hop covered in a dripping later of funk. ...Between putting out an album, winning the 2009 Syracuse Big Break Contest, and opening for superstars like Fergie, it seems like the band is off to a great start."
- Rob Sickelco, City News (Rochester)

Adam Gold, keyboards, bass & vocals
Jack Brown, vocals & lyrics
Emanuel Washington, drums

Fans across America are talking about Sophistafunk, the product of three multi-talented musicians (Adam Gold, Jack Brown, and Emanuel Washington) who combine spoken-word artistry, old-school hip hop, and funky rhythms to create a unique live band experience.

The 4 elements of Sophistafunk:
(1) a 1950s jazz club,
(2) a 1960s poetry den,
(3) a 1970s funk party,
(4) a 1980s hip hop show.

Keyboard virtuoso & funk energizer Adam Gold is a one-man music machine. At every show, Adam plays the Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, Nord Electro, and Moog Synthesizer while also singing and beatboxing! An unforgettable performer with an incredible retro stage presence, he is also very well known around Syracuse as a former funk DJ (WAER 88.3) and live music venue owner (Funk 'n Waffles).

Known for his complex flows and insightful lyrical content, Jack Brown burst on the music scene in 2005 as a hip hop producer, and later became known as a performer, spoken-word poet, and musician. A true student of the greats, Jack carries on a lyrical tradition pioneered by such legends as John Lennon, Bob Marley, and Gil-Scot Heron. He has already shared the stage with the likes of KRS-One, Method Man, Fergie, Asher Roth, Sean Kingston, and many others. Jack was featured on the Projected Mixtape Series Volumes 1, 2, and 3, and he receives regular airplay in NYC (WSIA 88.9).

Since before he could walk, Emanuel Washington has had drum sticks in his hands. The "E-man" began playing the drums in church at age 5 and the rest is history. He is an accomplished performer with several high-profile Syracuse bands, including Electric Relaxation and The J Project. Drawing on his experience with gospel, jazz, funk, hip hop, and R&B, Washington has created his own unique style that is very personal and expressive. He puts a tremendous amount of passion and positive energy into his music, so sit back and enjoy his creative rhythms.
