Returning for another onslaught of shows, Glasper hopes his audience is as ready as he is for 5 weeks of epic collaborations and unexpected surprises.

Robert Glasper is the leader of a new paradigm in jazz, with a career that spans musical and artistic genres, winning 3 Grammys and 6 nominations across 5 categories, as well as an Emmy for his song on Ava Duvernay’s doc “13th".

October 2019 marks his return to the Blue Note, one of his first jazz stomping-grounds, for another month long Residency (coined “Robtober”) as he takes over the Blue Note New York with an unprecedented 5 week celebration of his musical career.

Whilst his style consistently defies definition, Glasper’s residency demonstrates not only different eras, but also various parts of his musical community and the impact his collaborators have had on his development and style.

This October’s run begins with two of Glasper’s most consistent and steady conglomerates back-to-back. The first week will open up with long time collaborators Chris Dave and Derrick Hodge, joined by special guest Yasiin Bey for the 2nd year in row. Glasper, Dave and Hodge first came together in 2003, and soon became a seminal musical force; while Robert simultaneously became the Musical Director for Yasiin (Previously Mos Def). Together they forged a sound that was not only the backdrop to the era’s hiphop and R&B stars (Nas, Maxwell, Common…and more!) - but also the vanguard of a new jazz flavor, which won a whole new audience with its genre-breaking style.

The following week reunites Glasper with his long acoustic trio, with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid, who created his first two Blue Note releases: Canvas (2005) and In My Element (2007), along with the extremely successful Covered (2015). Covered, which was recorded before an intimate gathering of invited guests in Capitol Records’ historic Studio A, was designed to bring Glasper’s newfound Black Radio fan base along as he returned to the jazz fold. The set list features songs by hip-hop and R&B stars like Kendrick Lamar, Musiq Soulchild, John Legend, and Bilal alongside the jazz standard “Stella By Starlight.” Displaying his trademark eclecticism, Glasper also includes tunes by Radiohead and Joni Mitchell, along with a stirring collaboration with legendary singer/activist Harry Belafonte. The Glasper originals on the album include a re-working of “I Don’t Even Care” which was a bonus track on Black Radio 2 featuring Macy Gray and Jean Grae.

DJ Jahi Sundance will be joining both trios nightly and be a mainstay throughout the residency.

In week 3 of the residency Robert Glasper with perform with special guest and bassist Esperanza Spalding This must-see event marks the second year of Robert Glasper’s Residency at Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City. His residency brings out some of the biggest names in entertainment and is unmatched in its artistic production.

Glasper will also play a Roy Hargrove Tribute for the legend who passed away in late 2018 and was an artist with whom Glasper worked very closely. The artists performing with Glasper, such as Terrace Martin complete a special and significant tribute to Hargrove’s legacy and impact in the jazz artist community.
