New Orleans Swamp Donkeys

This is Early Jazz, the 1900s to 1920s hot style that started out as Jass. The The New Orleans Swamp Donkeys Traditional Jass Band have brought this traditional style to international stages by combining their deep respect for the forms and sounds of the era with modern sensibilities and ideas. The band is led by the larger-than-life James Williams, who brings passion, history, personality, and immense raw talent to his work; playing trumpet and singing like the great Satchmo, he is the 2017 Featured Summer Artist at the Louis Armstrong House Museum.

Yet, as Stephen Duffy of BBC Scotland put it, James is "resolutely his own man." Musicians always bring a mixture of tradition and interpretation to jazz, however with James Williams and his A-team of New Orleans performers, you will be transported to Storyville 100 years ago at the same time that you remember this is an entirely new band full of fresh ideas, led by an entirely unique performer.

Join us at the Blue Note for a special July 4th performance – Louis Armstrong's observed birthday – to celebrate together with a top trumpet player and band from New Orleans on the frontier of jazz.
