Ray Gelato
Ray Gelato, vocals & sax
Other musicians, TBA

Ray Gelato has been a successful performer in Europe for more than twenty five years. He is an acclaimed singer and saxophonist based in London. His approach to music is full of fun, yet he never stops displaying his serious jazz talent. He can fire up an audience with the vocal stylings of singers like Louis Prima and Dean Martin, then captivate them with a ballad played on his lush sounding tenor sax. Highly regarded by critics all over the world, Ray is recognized for his reverent approach to the standards and the distinct imprint he leaves on the classic jazz tradition. His list of admirers included the late sax legend Sam Butera, whose “Witnesses” were the backbone of Louis Prima’s performances for many years. Ray and Sam were featured together at Italy’s Umbria Jazz festival in 2003.

Ray formed “Ray Gelato and the Giants” in 1988 after having performed with various groups in England for several years. The ensemble has played to rave reviews all over the world, including five successive appearances at Umbria, memorable shows at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Spain’s San Sebastian Jazz Festival, and many other prestigious venues. They are regulars at some of Europe’s most popular clubs, including Ronnie Scott’s and The 100 Club in London, and the Blue Night in Milan. In the USA, Ray has performed in New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington DC, and Los Angeles. Ray gained increased notoriety in 1998 when he was featured in a commercial for Levi’s Dockers, distributed worldwide, performing the classic Louis Prima hit “Tu Vuo’ Fa L'Americano”. The song is included on the band’s studio album “The Men from Uncle” and on their “Live in Italy” CD. In recent years, he has performed for the Robbie Williams’ “Swing When You're Winning” concert at Royal Albert Hall in London, Paul McCartney’s wedding, and a command performance for Queen Elizabeth at The Ritz Hotel in London. In 2004 he signed with a subsidiary of the Telstar Music Group and released a new CD simply entitled “Ray Gelato”. In 2009 he released a new CD “Salute to the Great Entertainers” and published a cookbook “Cookin’ with Ray”.

When touring the USA, Ray teams up with the City Rhythm Orchestra. Known as “Philly’s premier swing outfit”, City Rhythm is led by Pete Spina and Nick Vallerio, and their high voltage style is a natural fit for Ray Gelato. City Rhythm has had much success in their own right touring the USA and Europe and producing several fine CDs on Limehouse Records including “Goin’ to Town”, “City Rhythm Strikes Again” and “Swingin’ Blue”. In 2005 they released “Vibrant Tones” with jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco. The disc received great reviews and extensive airplay, landing in the Top 20 of the jazz charts for 18 weeks (JazzWeek, Inc.). When City Rhythm teams with Ray Gelato, the show is non-stop fireworks. Their last tour together was in 2009 and included performances at the Blue Note jazz club in New York City, The Hilton Casino in Atlantic City, the Foxwoods Casino Showroom in Connecticut, and many other prominent venues.
