  • Courtney Pine

Courtney Pine made British jazz impossible to ignore.

In 1986, Journey to the Urge Within broke into the UK Top 40 and announced a new kind of British jazz star. Pine kept pushing from there, pulling reggae, hip-hop and drum & bass into the music and helping define a distinctly Black British jazz language.

Forty years on, Out of the Ghetto: A Modern Day Jazz Story looks back across that run, from his breakthrough debut through the restless experimentation of the 90s.

Pine brings it to the stage with Robert Mitchell, Rio Kai and Romarna Campbell, revisiting key moments from the catalogue with the fire and freedom that made them matter in the first place.
