  • Baaba Maal

Born in the far north of Senegal, Baaba Maal sings about the technological, political and environmental pressure on Africa as a country and continent, but still sings of his hometown of Podor on theedge of the Sahara desert, a place where many of the cultures of Western Africa meet.

Growing up in the 1960s, drawn to music rather than the family ‘business’ of fishing, he found himself inspired by African music, but also music from around the world, especially the American sounds from soul and gospel to rock’n’roll that had been influenced by African music. He was mentored by the great blind guitarist Mansour Seck, who became a lifelong collaborator and close friend, inspiring his conviction that music can change the world.

Baaba Maal fuses traditional West African instruments and rhythms with a dramatically modern electronic approach. After more than four decades of recording and performing as one of the most consistently compelling and surprising musicians in the world, he has collaborated with John Leckie, Brian Eno, Johan Hugo, Carlos Santana and Mumford & Sons. He has sung on numerous movie soundtracks including Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ and in 2018 became the voice of Wakanda for the Black Panther films. His music mixes personal and communal concerns with grand universal themes to produce an immersive soul music, reflected on his latest, widely acclaimed album, Being.

He uses his voice to go beyond music. In 2023 he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), using his role as performer and communicator to influence bankers, politicians and other decision makers relating in particular to the devastating impact of climate change. He founded the NANN-K trust to support local communities through regenerative agriculture, an extension of Baaba’s intention to speak for the people in Africa’s rural communities and succeed where it is difficult for political leaders to succeed.

Baaba Maal. Singer. Guitarist. Traveller. Ambassador. Dancer. Philosopher. Humanitarian. Speaker. Activist. A visionary voice for change.
