Emirates Pursuit of Jazz Winners: Siya Charles & Gally Ngoveni

Introducing Siya Charles and Gally Ngoveni – two authentic, home-grown jazz musicians hailing all the way from South Africa.

Siya Charles is a trombonist, composer and arranger from Cape Town. Siya is currently completing her dissertation and Masters in Music, specialising in jazz trombone performance at the University of Cape Town. She has worked with the likes of the late Hugh Masekela, Simphiwe Dana, Jimmy Dludlu and Freshly Ground. And she has performed in several ensembles such as the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band, South African National Youth Orchestra, Jeunesses Musicales Jazz World Orchestra and Mahler Chamber Orchestra.

Gally Ngoveni was born in Giyani Town. He is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and performer. Gally’s interest in music started at a very young age, performing as a bassist in bands such as The Exclusive, Jazz Revolution, Soca Band and Quest, as well as playing backing for some of the most celebrated artists like Jeff Maluleke (RSA), Bholoja (Swaziland), Waje (Nigeria), Femi Koya (Nigeria), Pops Mohamed (RSA), Velemseni (Swaziland), Mbuso Khoza (RSA) and Selaelo Selota (RSA). Internationally, he has shared stages with some of the greats such as Salif Keita, Ray Lema, Étienne M'Bappé, Kenny G and Joe Thomas.

As joint winners of the Emirates Pursuit of Jazz talent search, these two South African jazz artists are bringing their different, but equally incredible talents to represent an authentic South African jazz sound on the Blue Note stage.

From hundreds of ambitious South African artists, Siya and Gally fought their way into the final top 5 and were given the chance to perform live for the title of Emirates Pursuit of Jazz winner. In a surprise turn of events, the judges didn’t decide on just one winner, they chose two. Siya and Gally have both earned themselves professional recordings of their own singles, which will be aired first on a local South African radio station, Kaya FM.

Watch as they take to the stage, showcasing their spectacular sound live from the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York on 26 January 2019.
